Dedicated Web Hosting

What is a Dedicated Server?
Dedicated hosting, sometimes called dedicated server hosting, is a web hosting plan in which the customer is assigned a complete physical server for their web hosting needs. Unlike shared hosting plans, the assigned server is the customer's server alone and is not shared by any of the other web host's customers. While the server is actually still owned by the web host, the customer has a lot of control over the rented server, including the operating system installed, the software, firewall settings, and sometimes even the hardware.

Dedicated Web Hosting

Dedicated hosting, sometimes called dedicated server hosting, is a web hosting plan in which the customer is assigned a complete physical server for their web hosting needs. Unlike shared hosting plans, the assigned server is the customer's server alone and is not shared by any of the other web host's customers. While the server is actually still owned by the web host, the customer has a lot of control over the rented server, including the operating system installed, the software, firewall settings, and sometimes even the hardware. Because the customer has almost complete control over their rented server, it can be personalized according to individual needs, unlike shared hosting plans in which the customer cannot install any additional software onto the server.

The main advantage of a dedicated server is that customers aren't sharing any of their web hosting resources with other customers. The server is theirs and theirs alone. This means that if a customer runs a large, successful website, their traffic won't disrupt anyone else's website and no one else's website will disrupt theirs. Customers on this plan experience a very high amount of bandwidth and can enjoy a large amount of storage space. Most hosts who offer dedicated hosting plans can guarantee a 100% uptime in service, and if any dedicated server customer experiences unexpected downtime, they can get a refund for that downtime. In addition, dedicated hosting usually comes with priority support from the company, and any issues experienced can expect a quick resolution.

Dedicated hosting plans are highly secure and much more secure than their shared hosting counterparts. Because no resources are shared between customers, there is no fear of the security of one website affecting another. For this reason, those businesses who perform a lot of e-commerce transactions would prefer a dedicated server because not only can this type of server handle the load much better than the shared hosting options, but the risk of any sensitive information being compromised is significantly lessened.

Dedicated hosting works well for those web host owners with a higher level of technical expertise, such as web developers and system administrators. Because more control is in a customer's hands with a dedicated server, more responsibility is as well. This means that much of the server administration is left up to the customer, which can be daunting for those who have no experience in that area of web development. Some hosts will have an option for a managed dedicated server, at a higher cost, to perform operating system updates, firewall updates, load balancing and disaster recovery. For some, this extra measure of support is necessary in a hosting plan. However, this extra support usually comes with a an added price tag.

The higher price is the biggest downside to a dedicated hosting plan, which is why mostly businesses and already successful websites opt for this plan, and rarely would a smaller personal website need something quite so robust. However, the cost of choosing a dedicated server plan has been decreasing over the past several years, and it has begun to be a more attractive and available option to web owners who could not have previously afforded it.
