Q9 Opens First Phase of Calgary Data Center

Two years after launching its second Calgary data center, Canadian outsourced data center infrastructure provider Q9 Networks (www.q9.com) has opened its third data center in the Calgary area, which has a potential total capacity of more than 10,000 cabinet equivalents.

According to Q9’s Thursday announcement, the first phase of the data center, costing $50 million, will support 1,200 cabinet equivalents, more than 38 percent of which has already been reserved. Additional capacity will be brought online as required.

“The launch of this data center, our largest to date in Calgary, further strengthens Q9’s leading position in Western Canada,” Q9 chief executive officer Osama Arafat said in a statement. “Calgary is a strategic market where we have invested more than $90 million since 2002. We are committed to meeting the growing needs of our customers in all the geographies we serve and this data center is a significant part of Q9’s continuing program of expansion.”

The new data center’s infrastructure was built to the same exacting standards as all Q9 data centers and includes such features as outside air cooling capability to maximize energy efficiency, biometric security systems, multiple connections to the Internet, redundant power, HVAC and fire suppression systems, as well as 7/24 on-site security and technical support teams.

Q9’s unique network offers 100-percent uptime service level agreements on both power and network availability. Customer equipment and data center environmental parameters are monitored 7/24 by Q9’s Control center, staffed by experts versed in all aspects of IT and facilities management.

Q9 provides services to some of Canada’s most important organizations. Earlier this year, it signed a 15-year data center services agreement, worth more than $100 million, with public sector business process and information technology outsourcing provider EDS Advanced Solutions (www.edsadvancedsolutions.com) to support its contract to provide data center services to the British Columbia Ministry of Labour and Citizens’ Services.
